How to Teach Your Toddler to Dress Themselves

As a mother, you know that there are a million things to juggle on a daily basis. From making sure the house is in order, to keeping up with your child's ever-changing developmental needs – it's a full-time job! So, anything you can do to make your life a little easier is a bonus.

One way to do this is by teaching your toddler how to dress themselves. This may seem like a daunting task, but with a little patience and some helpful tips, you'll be surprised at how quickly they pick it up. Not only will this save you time in the morning, but it will also give your toddler a sense of confidence and achievement.

So, where do you start? Here are our expert tips to help teach your toddler how to dress themselves:

Start With the Basics

Before you start teaching your toddler how to dress themselves, it's important to make sure they are familiar with the clothing items they need to wear. Show them how to identify the front and back of their shirts and pants, and teach them the names of different clothing items.

Teach Your Child How to Put On Different Types of Clothing

Once your toddler has a good understanding of the basics, it's time to teach them techniques and how to put on different items of clothing. Start with easy items like undies, socks and t-shirts, and then move onto more difficult items like zippers and buttons.

Explain things like, how socks should sit i.e heel part should be at back on the heel and not at the front near the ankle. When trying to get a shirt the right way, it’s best to lie it on the floor and identify the front & back, then make sure the low part of the collar goes to the front.

For shirts and dresses, show them how to put their arms through the holes and then teach them how to pull the shirt/dress down over their head. For undies & pants, teach them how to identify the front from the back. An easy way to do this is to place them on the ground so it’s easy to see the difference between the front & back. Show them how to feed their feet through the holes and pull them up.

Time to Undress!

Now that your toddler has mastered putting on clothing items, it's time to teach them how to take them off. This is often a little more difficult, but with some patience, creativity, and a sense of humour, you'll get there in the end.

A good way to start is by teaching your toddler how to take off their socks. You can do this by explaining the easiest way to take socks off is by pushing the back of the sock over their heel. Once the back of the sock is over the heel it is easily removed by putting the front part at the toe of the sock.

For shirts and dresses, teach them how to pull it over their head and then how to take off each sleeve. For pants, teach them how to unbutton and unzip them, and then how to pull them down from the waist.

A common toddler trait is removing undies and pants at the same time. To save you time when it comes to washing them, you might like to teach them to remove pants first, then undies.

To make the whole process easier, you can use a dressed up doll or stuffed animal to illustrate. This will not only make it more fun, but it will also help your toddler to understand the concept better.

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Like anything in life, the more your toddler practices, the better they'll get at dressing and undressing themselves. So, make sure to give them plenty of opportunities to practice.

A good idea is to lay out clothes on the floor for the next day. When it is time to get dressed your toddler knows exactly what to put on and can see the front and back. All they need to do is sit on the floor and put the clothes on the way you have taught them.

If they need a little help, use this opportunity to teach them how to perfect their technique. Be patient and supportive, remember their fine motor skills are still developing and it will take time for them to master how to dress themselves.

Most importantly, praise and encourage your child throughout the process. Let them know that you're proud of their achievements, and be sure to give them lots of hugs and kisses. This will help boost their confidence and self-esteem.
