Everything You Need to Know About Slings and Carriers

Because every baby is different, there are different types of slings and carriers, and everyone has their own personal taste, there are some things you'll want to know when it comes to baby slings and carriers.

Here are the basics:

What is a Sling or Carrier?

A baby sling or carrier is a product designed to give you a hands-free way of carrying your child, whether out and about or in the comfort of your own home.

There are different types, they are perfect for children ranging from newborns to toddlers, and they make your life as a new mum a heck of a lot easier.

Benefits of Using a Sling or Carrier

As a new mum, or even an experienced one, carrying your baby in a sling or carrier can make both of your lives much easier.

Baby carrying allows you to still be productive, as you have free hands to get things done while knowing your baby is safe and out of harm’s way. This also helps you adjust to life as a new mum, as carriers allow you to still experience the freedom to some extent.

For your baby, being close to you comforts them, and in turn, can reduce crying, promote their health, and even enhance the bond formed between the two of you.

Babywearing can also be great for a baby that does not like napping, as the movements you make while carrying them can help soothe them and possibly help them drift off to sleep.

5 Different Types of Baby Carriers and Slings

There are tons of different types of baby carriers and slings on the market — this isn’t a one size fits all sort of deal.

Here are 5 different types of baby carriers and slings:

Ring Sling

The ring sling is made from woven fabric and is perfect for your child from birth through their toddler ages.

It’s worn on one shoulder and creates a pocket to carry your baby in.

In the ring sling, you can carry your baby at your front, on your hip, or even on your back, but it’s strongly recommended to always ensure your baby is in an upright position and monitored at all times.

Soft Wrap

A soft wrap, sometimes called a stretchy wrap, is a long piece of cloth that gets wrapped around your body. Your baby is placed inside, and the cotton and spandex fabric blend cradles then safely.

This type of carrier is great for younger babies.

Woven Wrap

Similar to a soft wrap is the woven wrap, except a woven wrap is made from a stiffer fabric that has a bit more structure, making it great for carrying older, larger babies.

This wrap is also worn by tying it around your body and allowing your child to be cradled inside.

Soft Structured Carrier

A soft structured carrier uses straps, buckles, and padding to ensure a comfortable and adjustable fit for babies and toddlers alike.

These carriers can be worn on the front of the body, your hip, or your back.

Meh Dai

The Meh dai carrier is made of a panel of fabric with comfortable, padded straps that go around your waist and straps that go around your shoulders.

These carriers are great for newborns to toddlers, and with one, you can carry your baby on your front, hip, or back.

Safety Tips when Using Carriers and Slings

When it comes to your baby, you will do anything in your power to ensure they’re safe and healthy, and just like with anything else, there is a right way to use a baby carrier or sling and a wrong way.

Here are some tips you’ll want to follow when it comes to using a baby carrier or sling:

Safety First: Read the Instruction Manual

First things first, you’ll always want to begin by reading the manufacturer’s instruction manual that came with your carrier or sling. Since baby carriers and slings are not a one-size-fits-all product, the correct and safe way to use one can differ between manufacturers.

If your baby carrier or sling doesn't come with instructions, don't buy it or contact the company to get them.

Baby Carrier and Sling Safety or T-I-C-K-S

Product Safety Australia have created a set of guidelines you can follow to ensure your baby is always positioned safely in their carrier or sling. You may also hear the term TICKS, which stands for:

  • Tight - Your baby sling or carrier should be tight, holding your baby close against your body. If it’s loose, your baby can slump, making it difficult for him or her to breathe.
  • In view at all time - When glancing down, you should always be able to see your baby’s face, and their head and face should always be clear of fabric or straps.
  • Close enough to kiss - Your baby should be positioned high enough on your body that, when you tilt your head forward, you should be able to kiss your baby on their forehead or top of their head.
  • Keep baby's chin off the chest - Your baby should never be positioned in a way where their chin is forced into their chest. This can restrict their breathing.
  • Supported back - Your baby should be laying in a natural position so that their tummy and chest are leaning against you.

Don’t forget about yourself though, mum! Always make sure the carrier or sling and baby feels comfortable on your body as well, as improperly positioned ones can cause soreness or even injury.

Choose the Right Sling for your Baby

Every baby is different, and a sling that works for one mum may not work for another.

If possible, take your baby with you when you go to purchase a sling or carrier. This is the best way to ensure your baby will fit comfortably without having to go through the hassle of returning it.

Make Sure the Fit is Correct

A correct fit is vital not only for the baby and the mum but also for the father. Just because the baby fits you correctly, mum doesn’t mean it will fit the baby’s father correctly, and so you’ll either want to purchase 2 slings or buy one that is adjustable.
